Each member is chosen according to the following criteria:

Scholarship: Students must achieve a GPA of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) in order to be considered for NHS™
Service: Students must display voluntary contributions to the school and community. The contributions must be done with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit
Leadership: Students must be resourceful, dependable, and persons who show a positive outlook on life
Character: Students must uphold principles of morality and ethics, be cooperative, demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability, show courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintain a good, clean lifestyle
Citizenship: Students must display a high understanding of the importance of freedom, justice, democracy, and civic involvement. Students must also display a mature involvement in community programs
